Trade Window

It seems as though there isn't one. When I pass an item to another player, no trade window pops up, and the item just disappears. It makes the sound as though it went into a backpack, but it doesn't. Where did it go?? And where do I need to look for why this trade window is missing? I've searched these forums as well as the Wiki, to no avail. Thanks in advance....
