Sphere Community Test Server - Soulless - 02-12-2016 08:22 AM

Hello All,

I had the thought of a Sphere Test Center that did updates on the regular to keep in line with the latest nightly, frequent script updates. A gathering of Sphere Community members who would be able to work on it at their leisure. This could be official or even unofficial, but it would be aimed at improving the script packs current flaws and adding accurate content. Most importantly we would have testers to test content regularly. We could start a poll to see what the server should be like and start from there. Obviously OSI could be a standard (specific era) and we could have Sphere's own twist on it.

Does anyone have an interest in this? Maybe get some extra pulse into the community? If nothing it could be some fun to create.

Input, recommendations, and alternative ideas are welcome.

We tried to do this years ago. It was called Sphere Community Play. Had most of the cities spawned, some dungeons.
Also we were working with SCP, so it was supposed to help with that script pack.

Anyway the forums should be here, but in private (only staff can see it)

I am willing to host on my network here which is good, or willing to fork out some money for private hosting out there in the world somewhere. My spawn script has everything up to Ter Mur spawned (but we're missing some new npcs), It's about as close to OSI spawns as we can get. If we had enough key sphere community members working on this at one time it could get done rather fast. so far the idea has had a good reception, I essentially already have the server up and stable. If there is enough interest I'll make preparations to get things going further.

Sphere Community Play should make a comeback this year!

I can supply a host.

RE: Sphere Community Test Server - Soulless - 02-14-2016 04:11 AM

Well the server is already up, I also have an Amazon EC2 so I think we're good on a host. The part we really need to focus on is who all want's to participate and how to get testers involved in the project. We could hopefully have some forums setup here for the testers. It would be very easy to toss up a suitable webpage in a couple days.

I suppose anyone who is interested should post in this thread what kind of interest they have and what they can provide. I am currently and can continue to host and take a large role in maintaining the server. I also can provide a heavy role in development.

I'm not much for being great for coding but i'd back Soulless any day and think this could be great... my 2 cents.

This has been bounced around a lot. As ShiryuX pointed out, this has been done prior with SCP. That project failed horribly due to uncontrolled and unchecked script additions and never saw the light of day or a completion. The process of doing this would need a dedicated team to get it done and converge together to layout an agreed upon script base and standardization. This is also where issues come in, as a lot of people cannot seem to agree on a script guideline base for a server.

Though the idea is magnificent in thought, the application has always failed. This was tossed around behind closed doors in the sphere developer forums and in private between Xun and I. One time also between Extreme and I as well.

Just like development, not a lot of us have time for it. There is no pay involved and most of our daily lives take precedence over working on free projects. Mind you, we seem to have more time for our own servers than something that benefits the whole. Which I always thought was a bit odd, but hey, that's how Sphere has always been. Everyone wants their own custom server.

Edit:
Just think, this would mean everyone would have to come together and staff a server together without arguments. I'd love to see this done.

I am sure you figured who I am by now. LOL. I don't have access to my old email to jump on my old account, but if you are interested in working on a server, I have already contacted Extreme. I will be contacting Xun soon as well. I know you and I have tried this route before and it flopped, but we can give it another go if you'd like. I have been doing about 2,000 - 4,000 lines of a code a day in my free time setting a proper server and file structure broken down how it should be. Most of the core is near done and about 90% of the mobiles are up-to-date. Working on artifacts and items and rebalancing item generation functions. Luck still needs to be added in, but I have T-Maps working as EA does at the moment (That alone was a huge task). Weaponry and armor is done. Spells, hahaha... no. I haven't touched them minus the combat code me and Joe released years back. It is the small core things that need to be done at the moment and reworking a few skills. It's probably ready for Beta release minus it not being spawned or decorated. Which other spawning scripts won't work with my naming conventions.

I compiled all of my work over the past ten years or so and have been adding in additions to the systems that were made for this project and completely scrapped the old server I had back when I started.

Like I said, it needs tweaking and using some of Sphere's core is not ideal in some situations, but you, Extreme, Xun, and I have always created something that trumped the core a million times over.

Let me know if you are interested. PM me on here and I will give you my new Skype (Yes, locked out of old email means locked out of old Skype as well).

Cancel that noise. I remembered my password. ^_^ LOL

RE: Sphere Community Test Server - Soulless - 02-16-2016 12:45 PM

I think we can do it, I'm confident. We can do it with good organization, a clear path and goals, unified ideals about the server, and a little compromise perhaps even. It sounds like we might have a small team already, we just need to "sit down" so to speak and get it figured out as a whole. We can make an ERA check list and see what's good, what's missing, and what we have as individuals to contribute. I have a server up and running, we can use that, we can use a different one, we just need some foundation to start with.

Hmmm. It is worth consideration. Possibly anyhow. Just checked my inbox and I noticed a business proposition, but I can definitely make time for some server work since I am working on mine again and within two weeks have almost the entire core done and flavor. Yay for focus!!!! ^_^

Post what you have in mind for this live server. Doesn't need to be super detailed, just the general stuff you have in mind. I don't mind helping if it is within my code guidelines to add to it. Doesn't matter to me who is hosting, by the way. That is up to you all. People get too grumpy with me when I try to organize things. Micromanaging from my end infuriates people. hehe.

Like I said, I am working on mine, I might be able to contribute my lower end scripts to it to my moderate stuff or work on new systems if needed. Someone from here hit me up as well about paying me to design a few systems for them as well. So I am waiting to get a response back from that user.
