autharitive server - yvz - 01-18-2014 01:02 AM

Hello everyone. I was wondering if sphere is autharitive or everything is happening in client and sphere receives the result. For example, during the combat calculations are in client or in sphere happening ?

Everything happens on the server (calculations, restrictions, movement, combat, craft...)
You could just spoof the communications and make things the way you want Smile
In a few words, client ask somethings to the server, then the server check/execute every task then send the result to the client

Oh ok so thats really good cuz you cant trust players Smile but this operations are costly. How many active users can sphere support assuming that the server has cuttingedge technology? Oh and is sphere opensource ? Can i take a look at the server code ?

open source:
They said it would be if they stopped developing.

UO Servers does not consume too much resources, they can fill your RAM but does not exceed your processor capacity.
There is a Brazilian Sphere Server (Dimensions) that is a 12Gb RAM and QuadCore Xeon 2.13ghz that runs 80-120 players and I bet they are not using 20% of their server capacity (Coruja can tell exactly what is going on the server)

Cutting-edge servers may hold about 1000+ players with no problems.
The main disadvantage of Sphere is it script-parser, it does use too much CPU.
UOForever (RunUO server) once hit 997 players, with 500-600 daily.
Official RunUO Servers claimed they've hit 3000+ players back in 2005 and I've found a post on UODEV.de saying that they hit 7891 players in 2004.

Back to Sphere, I never saw a stress test, but the scenario should not be different
The Abyss Sphere hit about 250 players, and if I am not wrong, they use Sphere 0.51a, a very very old sphere version on a 12x4GB 2xXeon Quad-Core.
I used to home host a 30-40 players sphere server back in 2004 on a Pentium3 700mhz and 512Mb Ram with no performance issues
So, do not fear about not having the resources, UO servers does not consume too much resources

Do you remember the name or website? So we can peek on what resources they use

yes i know those turkish servers as im turkish. i was playing uo back in the time in 2002- 2005. but then i lost the interest in playing uo due to lack of graphics and game mechanics. thats why i try to understand how sphere works. i want to develop a clone of uo with diablo-like graphics and mechanics. i dont understand why mythic doesnt do a re-make of the "best" mmo rpg in history. they are "wasting" their time with games like warhammer online which is a clone of other "not" cool mmo rpgs. i would rather see uo with new technology instead of playing warhammer.

this is really a shame as i see it. we "deserve" better graphics, better mechanics.

by the way kingdom reborn is a huge fail. they used old 2d tiles and try to sell it as 3d oÔ
