UO is dead? - Oxtar - 12-17-2012 01:28 AM

Well i've been looking to multiple shards to check out their population, to see if the pool of players is large enough to make a huge shard with multiple custom scripts. What i noticed was that it would be close to useless to make that kind of shard now...

Big servers (today) has close to 50 players online.

Small servers has 10-15 players.

New servers has 5 or less players.

So i want your opinion on this issue, is it a waste of time to bring up a new shard with an incredible amount of custom scripts for 5 to 50 players?

WHERE ARE THOSE MISSING PLAYERS? In the past, i was used to see servers with over 150+, even 500+ on SOME servers... Even the new servers had close to 20 new players in the first week.

Erm...
UOSA: 500 players online
UO Demise: 400 players online
UO Hybrid: 300 players online

And so much more.
I think we are in a retrogame period of time. Look the new games who have a big success: return of old RPG, retroclones of rogue like and others oldies.

I think UO is not dead, yet Smile

It's not dead, it's just more difficult to get players.

In my opinon, while the technical part of UO's emulation improved, the "advertising" and "game design" side started to decrease, this was also caused by the invasion of "osy stile / old skool!11!" shards back in the time( a side-effect of runuo's release i think).

That would mean the player's needs are more WoW style oriented. Quests, environment interaction and so on.

The hard part would be to be noticed then.

Ditto to what Darksun said.

UO isn't in it's hey day anymore, a lot of people have moved on to other things, but that doesn't mean that as a game it is dead.
There are still plenty of players out there for the privately run shards, the trick is attracting them because now a days there are so many shards vieing for attention.
To get the players to come you have to offer them something that they will not find elsewhere. You have to be able to pull them out of their comfort zone on whatever server they are playing with their friends and get them to come and try you server out.
