RE: Any progress about open source?
And is it worth going open source and showing the code to everyone in order to gain only 3 devs? Couldn't you join the dev team while staying closed source?
It's true that the risk of someone writing new hacking tools is significantly lower than in the past, but it's still not zero and the consequences would be heavy; for me, having only 2-3 new guys working at the core (again, can't you do it while staying closed source?) it's a benefit which does not balance the downsides.

@karma
Think someone who wants to develop game server like sphere server but he wants to make some changes on core as well not only by scripts. So he is looking existed projects and sees that some of them open and some of them closed. He insists on developing projects on the uo projects which is closed source. So after a while, He do realize that he is only developing his server but cant get benefit from it to himself as a self-learning programming tool. What I mean is by letting people seeing projects like sphere server as open source make them improve on programming so that they can even do another stuff in their life related to ultima online or not. I donot care actually. The purpose is supposed to be sharing the knowledge. Forget about exploits and other stuffs. It will be challenging. Developers should enjoy with issues like that. So if there is no competitor or challenger in our life, what is point of developing and doing stuffs ? Anyway, I hope you get what just tried to explain.

RE: Any progress about open source?
Honestly, all claims that open source will cause players to find exploits is ridiculous. The source has been leaked more often then most people realise. Anyone with knowledge to find these exploits would have no trouble finding the source online.

Will decide soon, just in the middle of moving to a new city, so I don't want make that decision right now...

If you don't think it's a concern, then maybe going open source is a good idea. You may want to find a way to organize the work without direct communication between people, because there isn't a precise line to follow.

You will also find that a lot sphere servers over time have used the leaked source codes .... Gard, Uo diamond / quartz, coldfire, mythik, atlantis, wasteland etc all used leaked versions of the source and altered it accordingly. Then you have a lot of the shards owned by the sphere dev team, Dimension UO, lothlorian etc. which act(s/ed) as a way to test new variations on the source code.

The code should have been opened up a long time ago.

RE: Any progress about open source?
just a question to the people who want open source ... why are you asking for open source if you cant share scripts here so how do u expect people to think you guys will share any fixes or improvements to the source once or if released?

RE: Any progress about open source?
I guess you didn't make the homework before posting it this generalized message...

There is some scripts i've shared on this account (Escriba) and many others posted with my previous account (which i can't remember the login right now)...

And even if everybody never share an script in the community, many of those persons try to help others when they are lost... or maybe even opening some thread asking for help with something that many others could use... thats the meaning of "community"

I don't think anyone wants sphere opensource to share scripts for shards...
I think people want sphere opensource to share new features on inner core of sphere, and this way help the developers to improve their shards.

People preffer to "copy" anything... no one wants to think about the problem and try to find some elegant solution... it's easier wait untill someone solve your problem (even doing the worst way), than lose a week or two thinking and programming some damm cool funcionality...

Exemple: If i had waited sphere solve the buy/sell problems... i would be dead by now! what i did??? i spent about 5 days re-scriping all the packet.. now my shard sells ungrouped itens (like weapons, armors, etc) grouped... even collect taxes in any buy/sell so my shard will never inflate the economy creating gold on events/quests/treasures/etc...

Exemple 2: Ultima Online client sends since version 4 or 6 the client language infomation to the server... WHY till now sphere have no default multi-language system? (http://docs.polserver.com/packets/index.php?Packet=0xBF Subcomand: 0x0B)

not really, afaik the leak source is from 55i (a 15 years old code) and also don't have the packet/network engine, which there's no way to compile the .exe without this

also I never used the sphere source code to build custom codes exclusively to my server because it's not fair, I'm a developer to improve the source to the community, not for me. My server uses the same SphereSvr.exe downloaded from nightly page as everyone does here
